Skin cancer management

Ms Bowers provides the surgical management of common skin cancers, including basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Care is delivered within established pathways, with access to a regional multidisciplinary team (MDT) and dermatology colleagues where required.

About the procedure

What it involves

Most skin cancers are treated by surgical excision — removing the lesion with a margin of healthy tissue, which is then sent for laboratory analysis (histology) to confirm it has been completely removed. Depending on the site and size, the area may be closed directly or need reconstruction.

Higher-risk or complex cases are discussed at a regional skin cancer multidisciplinary team (MDT) so the plan is agreed by a team of specialists, in line with recognised cancer pathways. Ms Bowers partners with dermatology consultants for diagnosis and ongoing management where appropriate. [Confirm pathway (private/NHS), biopsy and referral arrangements.]

Key facts

BCC, SCC & specialist care

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC)

The most common skin cancer. It is slow-growing and very rarely spreads, and is usually cured by complete surgical removal.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)

A common skin cancer that can grow more quickly and, less often, spread. It is usually treated by surgical excision with appropriate margins.

MDT & dermatology

Where required, your case is reviewed by a regional multidisciplinary team and managed in partnership with dermatology consultants.

Common questions

Skin cancer management FAQs

How is skin cancer diagnosed?

Diagnosis is based on examination and, where needed, a biopsy — a small sample of tissue sent for analysis. [Confirm biopsy/diagnostic arrangements.]

Will I need reconstruction?

Small lesions are often closed directly; larger ones, or those in delicate areas such as the face, may need reconstruction. This is discussed fully before surgery.

What is an MDT?

A multidisciplinary team brings together specialists — surgeons, dermatologists, pathologists and others — to agree the best plan for higher-risk or complex cases.

Who will be involved in my care?

Ms Bowers leads the surgical care and works with dermatology consultants and the regional MDT as required, so the right expertise is involved at each step.
